April Construction Update from BEIS
The latest Monthly Construction Update from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which uses the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) as one of its sources, is now available.
The latest update shows that construction output decreased by 0.1% in volume terms in February 2022, representing the first monthly decrease since October 2021. This follows an upwardly revised 1.6% increase in January 2022..
The decrease in monthly construction output in February 2022 came from a decrease in repair and maintenance (-0.5%), while new work saw a slight increase of 0.1% on the month. Infrastructure, which often sees large variations, accounted for the largest decrease at -2.5%.
Repair & maintenance activity continues to perform strongly, and has done so since the start of the pandemic. The level of construction output in February 2022 was 1.1% above the February 2020 pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic level; with new work 3.7% below, and repair and maintenance 10.2% over the February 2020 level.
